Koh Samui, Thailand – Alex’s Favorite Island

Koh Samui

Koh Samui has a special place in our hearts, especially Alex’s.  To date, its his favorite tropical Island and the place he wanted to be for his birthday.  So we made it happen!

What’s sooo special about it?

For one, the island vibe here is laid back and the locals are especially nice.  Thai people are already some of the kindest and warmest people we have ever met but here on the island, ever more so.

Two, the food scene here is one of the best we have found anywhere; from the food hawkers on the street, to the night markets they have daily, to the restaurants, the food is delicious and very inexpensive.  Most of the street vendors charge between $1.5-$2 for a full meal; for $10 you can samples nearly everything in the market.

Three, The beaches and the sunsets are simply incredible!  We are both beach bums and love lounging, sipping ice teas, and going for an occasional swim, Alex likes to grab a snorkel too.   The water is warm and crystal clear, the beaches are kept clean and the sand is just perfect.

Four, There are loads of other things to do here as well.  Like, go scuba diving ($35 per dive), or explore the island by scooter ($5 per day), head to one of the zoos to see elephants, tigers and other exotic animals ($12 per person).  There are also lots of waterfalls to swim in and trails to hike.  This island is perfect for those who love to go on a grand adventure!

Be Sure to Visit these 3 Towns!

Chewang Beach

Chewang Beach is the heart of the island.  It’s the largest town on the island where the main strip is with a mall and lots of restaurants.  We loved coming here throughout the stay during the evenings and simply walking the strip, popping into shops and choosing fun places to eat.

Lamai

Lamai is our favorite little town to go to regularly.  There is a strip of 12 food hawkers stalls that come out every night in this little town that we came to regularly.  The town itself if full of little shops that are fun to go through.  There is also a fun little Russian restaurant we ate at in this town too.

Fishermans Village

This is a MUST VISIT little village on the island.  Its full of cute cafes, shops, and good restaurants.

Where to stay:

Where you stay is really important while you are in Koh Samui!  Staying on the wrong side of the island wont give you the best experience.  You should stay close to Chewang Beach, but our favorite town is Lamai because it is a little quieter then Chewang but only a 20 min scooter ride from it.

Rocky’s Boutique Resort – (Lamai) Luxury with a perfect beach and large family friendly pools.  There is no other place like it in the world! This hotel also had one of the best breakfast we have ever experienced!  The staff is great and the general manager Martin is wonderful, friendly, and extremely helpful!  We highly recommend springing for one of the beach front suites/junior suites like we did if you can, if not, all the rooms here are good.

Le Meridian – (Lamai) 5 star luxury with all the bells and whistles.  We absolutely loved the massive infinity pool here; you can see the ocean from it too.  The staff and service go above and beyond the call of duty to make sure you have a great stay.  We really enjoyed having dinner with an ocean view while we were here, they have a great kitchen.

Tango Luxe Beach Villa –  A luxurious 14 villa resort with attention to detail and incredible sunset views from the large infinity pool.  This resort features private pools in each villa, breakfast served on your personal patio daily, and a staff that is ready to attend to your every need!  We really enjoyed the sunset dinner at this hotel, their chef here does a fabulous job.

Farmer’s Boutique Resort – Serene Luxury villas situated on green rice patty fields.  There is nothing else like this resort on the whole island!  We stayed in the premier pool villa and loved swimming in our large personal pool that looked over the beautiful rice patties. Alex would always bring a little bread with him back from breakfast to feed the fish that are in the rice patties.  This is a great option for those who want beautiful mountain views and a calm, quite and relaxing stay.

Koh Samui will always have a special place in our hearts!  Can’t wait to visit again soon
